MY Most Important Investment
My job as a financial advisor is to help people build and protect their financial assets. However, I believe that there is a kind of long-range planning that is much more important than money.
A wise man once asked, “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul?”[1] It is true that someone can be exceedingly wealthy, but still not know peace in their life. Sometimes it seems as if everything in life works against our having peace. The dog is barking, the kids are fighting, you’re stuck in traffic and you just had an argument with your spouse. Money can’t help with these things.
When I was nine years old I had an experience that challenged the peace in my life. My mother was diagnosed with a rare heart disease and told that she had no more than two years to live. Thankfully she outlived that prognosis by 12 years, but in the midst of all of the unrest my family experienced during this time, we began to wonder how peace is possible? How could we find a peace that would allow us to rise above our circumstance and hold steady during this storm in life?
Many people struggle to find peace in their lives and that is why I want to share my story with you. During those difficult years when we were faced with my mother’s illness, my family found peace in only one place, or more specifically, in one person. We found peace by putting our trust in the one person who transcends all of our trials and struggles: Jesus Christ. As God, Jesus is the only one who can truly offer us this gift.
I find that people all over the world try to reach God through a variety of means: going to religious establishments, following rituals, trying to live by a set of rules, etc. These are all good things, but they will not get us to God. But that’s okay because God’s great love compelled him to come to us in the person of Jesus Christ.
I believe that the Bible teaches that if a person believes that Jesus is the Son of God, that he died on the cross paying the penalty for their sins and rose from the dead, that they can have peace with God through trusting in Jesus alone to forgive their sins and give them life after death.[2]
I encourage you to explore the teachings of the Bible and the claims of Jesus and see if they resonate true in your heart and mind.
